Tías’s volunteer firefighters rescued an angel shark that had become stranded on Matagorda beach yesterday.
The shark measured over a metre and weighed around 15 kilograms.- It had become disoriented and distressed by the presence of several people.
Angel sharks, or angelotes, are often seen in the winter months as they move into shallower waters. They are not aggressive, and will avoid contact with humans.
The Angel Shark has been largely wiped out from many European seas – they are no longer found in the North Sea, for example, where they were fished as monkfish. The Canary Islands is one of the few remaining places where they thrive.
