Lanzarote has taken another step forward in its strategy in favour of a more sustainable and efficient energy model.

Canarian President, Ángel Víctor Torres, the President of Redeia, Beatriz Corredor, the Regional Minister for Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning, José Antonio Valbuena, the Commissioner for the Promotion of Sustainable Energy in Island Systems, Marc Pons and the President of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, attended the inauguration ceremony of the new 132 kV interconnection between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura that took place this morning at the Playa Blanca substation.
The newly opened interconnection reduces dependence on fossil fuels and CO2 emissions on both islands.
“It is an infrastructure that guarantees a more robust, efficient and sustainable energy system for the island and, at the same time, allows us to take a fundamental step in the fight against climate change and to get closer to the goal of total decarbonisation of the Canary Islands’ energy sector by 2040”, said María Dolores Corujo.
In her speech, the president encouraged the entities to “continue working to speed up the process of electricity interconnection with Gran Canaria and thus facilitate the access of the eastern islands to renewable energy storage on the capital island and achieve, as soon as possible, a decarbonised Canary Islands”.
