Spain’s meteorological agency, AEMET, has warned holidaymakers that the Spanish islands could be hotter than usual this summer.
AEMET spokesman Ruben del Campo said “There is a high probability that the next quarter will be hotter than normal”. The agency predicts that there is a 60% chance that the Canaries will have hotter weather than normal.
Local authorities will be putting an emergency heat protection plan into place during the summer months, with local health centres placed on high alert.
To avoid heatstroke, the Canarian Health Services recommends drinking plenty of water, avoiding heavy meals and excessive alcohol, avoiding physical exertion between the hours of midday and 4 pm, and advises vulnerable people, such as the elderly or ill, to remain indoors, in cool, shady places, during heatwaves.
Lanzarote is predicted to have plenty of sunshine and some strong winds over the next few days. The wind will drop on Sunday and temperatures are predicted to rise into the low 30s early next week.
