Yaiza Ayuntamiento has called for local supermarkets to install heavy-lidded waste containers outside their branches to prevent plastic waste.
The request is an attempt to prevent light plastic bags and disposable gloves being blown by the wind to local roads, parks and even into the sea, causing unsightly litter as well as a potential risk to wildlife.
Mayor Óscar Noda announced ““The managers of large retail stores have always shown themselves willing to help keep their surroundings clean, so we trust that they can place bins with heavy lids on their facades and parking areas that prevent plastic from flying away, or take any other actions they fell are appropriate.”
Noda also asked for the co-operation of customers, reminding them not to leave bags and gloves in shopping trolleys, where the wind can easily whisk them away.
