Yesterday we attended the launch of the Alarz restaurant, a new venture in fine dining located on the ground floor of the Gran Hotel in Arrecife, right next to the broad sweep of Reducto Beach.

The idea behind Alarz is to reinvent the classic chiringuito Spanish beach bar concept in five-star style, and to make this a reality they’ve appointed Paco Medina, one of the best chefs on Lanzarote, to take charge of the open-plan kitchen. Front of house, Maitre d’ Gustavo Valencia offered us the warmest and most attentive of welcomes

Raw seafood plays an important role in the offer at Alarz, with tempting tapas including tangy ceviches and fresh oysters dressed with spicy Mexican sangrita dressing. But there are also sumptuous arroces (rice dishes), fried and roast dishes.

Chef Francisco, who was recently awarded the Best New Canarian Chef award, says he wants to support local producers: “If we serve prawns, they’ll come from La Santa,” he told us. Alarz offers a chance for the Tinajo-born chef to spread his wings and realise his vision.

Alarz is the perfect place to dine in style, but you can also just pop in for a coffee or a drink, relax and enjoy the delightful surroundings. If you already know the stunning design of the La Buena Vida Pool Bar and the Blue 17 bar on the 17th floor, you won’t be disappointed with the surroundings at Alarz. It’s gorgeous.
