The Lanzarote Tourist Federation has criticised the Spanish Government’s decision, on Brits aged 12-17 to be vaccinated before travelling to Spain, as very damaging to the tourist industry.

The restrictions during the festive period last year resulted in over 60,000 cancellations of flights and made it impossible for school children to go on holiday (if unvaccinated) as they normally would during the school half-term.

A quote from the FTL stated, “The Canary Islands, and especially Lanzarote, put a lot of resources into family tourism during the winter period, and we see how bookings are unaffected in countries such as Greece or Turkey where they did not have these entry restrictions. Lanzarote was the islands that lost the most tourists in 2021.

By the time that the Government agrees to change the measure, British children will already be vaccinated. The Christmas holidays were lost. The holiday season is now, and it is necessary to act quickly to avoid diverting tourism to other destinations.”.
