Spain yesterday elevated its opposition to the US and Israel’s war in the Middle East, closing its airspace to military aircraft involved in Operation Epic Fury.
Spanish Defence Minister Margarita Robles yesterday called the war “Illegal, reckless and unjust”, adding “neither the bases are authorized, nor, of course, is the use of Spanish airspace authorized for any actions related to the war in Iran.”
The ban will not only affect US aircraft at the airbases in Cadíz and Seville but will also apply to US planes operating from third country airbases in countries such as France and the UK.
US planes that were based in Spain have already deployed to other airbases, such as Fairford in the UK.
A White House official told the BBC that the US military was “meeting or surpassing all of its goals under Operation Epic Fury and does not need help from Spain or anyone else”.
