Playa Blanca’s small town beach has been temporarily closed to swimmers following a sewage spill on Thursday afternoon.
According to Yaiza Ayuntamiento, the incident was caused by a blocked sewer manhole in the Parque Mediterráneo area, allowing wastewater to flow onto the beach. As a precaution, both swimming and public access have been suspended until water quality is confirmed to be safe.
The closure follows advice from the Canary Islands Health Service, which has recommended keeping the beach shut, maintaining warning signs, and informing the public until microbiological testing is completed.
Water samples are due to be collected on Sunday in line with health protocols, with results expected on Monday. If the tests confirm the water meets the required safety standards, the beach will reopen.
In the meantime, residents and visitors are being encouraged to use nearby beaches, including Playa Dorada, Flamingo, and the Papagayo beaches, until the town beach is declared safe for swimming again.
