Teguise Ayuntamiento celebrated its cherished tradition on Sunday 14th December, welcoming more than 500 senior citizens and retirees to a special Christmas lunch.

Organised by the Department for Senior Citizens, the gathering aims to honour the municipality’s older population, recognising their vital contribution to Teguise’s social and community fabric. It also serves to strengthen bonds and create spaces for companionship and interaction among seniors from every town in the district.

To ensure full and equal participation, the council arranged ten complimentary buses from locations across the municipality, including the island of La Graciosa, guaranteeing accessibility for all.

The afternoon was filled with celebration, featuring a festive meal and lively entertainment from the Dúo Tropical, who had guests dancing and singing along.

During the proceedings, the Mayor of Teguise, Olivia Duque, addressed the attendees. “This Christmas lunch is a token of gratitude and recognition to those who have been and continue to be fundamental pillars of our municipality,” she said. Mayor Duque congratulated all the seniors present and extended her thanks for “the tireless work carried out each year by the Department for the Elderly, as well as the dedication of its councillor, for making this gathering possible and for the constant care provided to our elderly citizens.”

Councillor for the Senior Citizens’ Department, Nereyda González, highlighted the council’s ongoing commitment. “This type of initiative is part of a municipal policy focused on respect, attention, and care for the elderly,” she stated. González confirmed the council “continues to work on improving activities and resources that promote active ageing, leisure, and social participation, with the aim of improving their well-being and quality of life.”

In a notable gesture that also supported local enterprise, this year’s attendees each received a special Christmas box. Filled with high-quality products from Lanzarote and prepared by the Department for Senior Citizens, the gift reinforced the importance of backing local producers and the island’s economy.
