The Canarian Government has extended opening hours and increased maximum capacities for bars, restaurants and nightclubs. The new rules for establishments are as follows:
From 15th December,
Level 1. Closing time: 4 am. Max capacity outdoors: 100%. Indoors: 75%
Level 2. Closing time: 3 am. Max capacity outdoors: 75%. Indoors: 50%
Level 3: Closing time: 2 am. Max outdoors capacity: 50%. Indoors: 33%
Level 4: Closing time: 1 am. Max capacity outdoors: 33%. Indoors 25%.
Any establishments wishing to operate the voluntary Covid passport scheme that comes into operation today can apply the rules that apply to the level immediately below the one their island is currently on.
It has also been clarified that islands at Level 1 will also be able to take advantage of the Covid passport scheme, and, if they do so, will be able to take advantage of unrestricted opening hours and 100% capacity indoors and outdoors.
Lanzarote is currently at Level 1, although the Canarian Government revises the levels later today. Sources from the government have hinted that Gran Canaria and Tenerife are almost certain to be raised to Level 2, but have made no mention of Lanzarote.
Lanzarote saw a sharp rise in cases yesterday, registering 40 new infections. However, the hospital is almost empty and there is no pressure on emergency health services.
9-month expiry on EU Covid certificates
It looks likely that the EU will shortly agree to place a 9-month expiry date on the Covid certificates that have been used for travel and will be used for the Canarian Government’s Covid passport scheme. This means that the document will automatically expire 9 months after the second dose was given. It will be renewed if and when a booster jab is administered.
The Canaries is currently offering booster jabs to people over the age of 60, who can request an appointment by calling 012, or 928 301012, or by attending their health centre. The campaign will be widened to include younger age-groups in the New Year.
