Lanzarote’s Water Council has announced a project to clear and renovate the channels supplying the Maretas de Montaña Blanca, a water-collection system dating from the mid-20th century.
730 metres of channels will be recovered. These are located on the slopes of Montaña Blanca and are around 60 cms in width and a metre deep. They were designed to channel rainwater into two large aljibes (water deposits) nearby. This system was originally intended to provide water to Arrecife, but finally only managed to provide supplies to Tías.
The project will not only reclaim a part of Lanzarote’s fascinating water heritage, but will also prevent damage caused by erosion and runoff.
The project will cost €100,910.08 and will take just over a month.
