Lanzarote’s Cabildo and Chamber of Commerce have presented a project for a Centre for Marine and Fishing Research, which will be located a Puerto Naos, Arrecife’s fishing port.

Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort said, “this is an unusual project that goes beyond the fishing sector and prioritizes scientific and research purposes, while encompassing other areas such as innovation, education, and traditions, and protecting heritage and culture”.

Fishing Councillor Samuel Martín revealed that the facilities would include a “hospital and operating theatre for whales and other cetaceans”, and will also feature “a library, a fishing museum, and even an observatory on the top floor for the enjoyment of the citizens”.

The President of the Chamber of Commerce, José Valle added that “this new construction will turn the entire area into a training hub with innovations such as the degree in Nautical Science”.

The centre will be located in the abandoned warehouse once used by the Frigorsa packing and refrigeration company.
