Lanzarote Seeks Teams to Draft New Tourism Plans for Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise

The Cabildo has launched the tender process for the preparation of new tourism modernisation plans for Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise, marking the next stage in updating planning for two of the island’s holiday resorts.

The contract, valued at €600,000, will be awarded through an open procedure following the completion of the necessary administrative steps and the signing of a management agreement with the Canarian Government.

The Cabildo will take the lead in overseeing the technical development of both planning documents, while the Canarian Government’s Department of Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion and Water will remain responsible for processing and granting final approval.

Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort said the aim is to produce planning documents that reflect the current needs of Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise, providing a clear framework for how both destinations should develop in the years ahead. According to Betancort, the plans are intended to address current challenges while ensuring future growth is based on realistic and well-founded proposals.

Regional Minister for Land Use and Territorial Policy Jesús Machín said the tender will allow specialist multidisciplinary teams to begin work on the plans over the coming months.

He explained that the goal is to produce robust urban planning, environmental and economic strategies that include improvements to public spaces, mobility, tourism infrastructure and the overall quality of the urban environment in both resorts.

The successful contractor will be responsible for preparing all technical, legal, economic and environmental studies required for the plans, as well as providing technical support throughout the administrative approval process.

For Playa Blanca, the work will first involve defining the scope of the project based on the municipality’s current legal and planning situation, ensuring that any future proposals are both practical and legally viable.

The new modernisation plans are designed to update land-use planning in both tourist destinations, encourage the refurbishment of accommodation and tourism services, improve public spaces and infrastructure, promote sustainable transport and strengthen the competitiveness of Lanzarote’s tourism sector.
