Lanzarote’s population increased by almost 3,000 people in 2023, reaching a total of 159,021 – the highest the island has ever recorded.

All the municipalities of the island saw an increase in population. Arrecife saw the largest population rise, of just over 1,000 people. Teguise and Yaiza saw an increase of around 500 each.

Lanzarote’s population has been steadily rising throughout the century and has more than doubled since 1996. Figures stopped rising after the financial crisis of 15 years ago and during the pandemic, but the rate of increase now seems to be back to normal.

Whole not all the people registered as residents will be on the island at any given time, it must also be borne in mind that there are usually several thousand tourists on the island, increasing the population by around a third on average.
