The Las Palmeras Golf Society are in the swing of things again, as golf courses reopen with new health measures in place. Jean-Francois Crinquand reports.

On Monday 11th May, most of the golf courses in the Canaries re-opened after two months´ closure due to the coronavirus. All over the islands thousands of golfers could finally go back to roaming the green acres of their lost paradise!

On Lanzarote, Tías Golf will remain closed until the end of the summer, but the Costa Teguise Golf Club is now open and… is very busy! Their catering facilities are open, too, and the whole Golf Club has a real buzz of anticipation and realisation. Golfers can now fulfil their lockdown dreams and it´s a joy watching younger and older players grinning their way down to the first tee.

Of course, we can´t forget Covid 19 – who could? Some strict measures are now in place to protect everyone from the coronavirus. These have been established by the Royal Spanish Golf Federation and approved by the Central Government in Madrid.

Social distancing is a must at all times before, during and after a round of golf.

All tee times have to be booked at least 24 hours in advance.
Flags on the green cannot be removed for putting, and a small device has been fixed inside of the hole to stop the golf ball going all the way down. This enables an easier ball pick up without touching the flag.

Rakes are no longer available for the bunkers, so the surface of the bunkers has to be smoothed by your feet after your shot.

The golf ball cleaning devices have been removed from the tee boxes and we can no longer clean our clubs, trolley and golf balls on site at the designated area after the game.

Only one person is authorised per buggy (two if from the same household).

But hey, all this is a small price to pay to be able to enjoy our passion during this difficult time. Please note that these strict measures will ease up as we progress through the de-confinement phases and the “new normal” way of playing golf should be in place by the end of June.

The Las Palmeras Golf Society is also back on the course doing what it does best: organising weekly games for its members and visiting guests alike. The Society is as busy as ever and a good number of players are joining us every Tuesday and Friday for our friendly and competitive games. Fancy a round with us? Send us an email and remember the 24-hours minimum notice required for bookings. As for me, I need to go now to prepare my bag and clubs, because GOLF IS BACK AND I LOVE IT!

Members of Las Palmeras Golf Society meet every Tuesdays and Fridays at 8.45am at Costa Teguise Golf. Visitors are most welcome to join us for a friendly game of Golf! By playing with the Society, you will qualify for a 20% discount on the Green Fees. Even better, the Costa Teguise Golf Club currently has a e speia oe ai nti the end of September: Six (6) green fees for €180, that´s €30 per round of golf!
