After a recent hospital procedure, local chef Nerina Howell found herself swapping the kitchen for the waiting room. It became a timely reminder that, while Lanzarote is known for its landscapes and sunshine, it’s often the everyday kindness of its people that leaves the greatest impression.

This month, I found myself on the opposite side of the table.
Usually, I’m the one planning celebrations, preparing menus, lighting the BBQ and making sure everyone else is enjoying themselves. This time, however, it was my turn to be looked after as I finally underwent a procedure I’d been putting off for far too many years.
Before I even arrived at the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital, I was reminded just how fortunate we are to live on this island. Anyone who has seen a chef in the middle of a busy service will know that answering the telephone simply isn’t an option. With guests to look after and meals to prepare, important calls can easily be missed.
Thankfully, Lydia and her team stepped in by handling calls from the hospital on my behalf, ensuring I didn’t miss any important updates. It was one less thing to think about and a lovely example of local businesses quietly supporting one another behind the scenes.
Naturally, I was feeling a little apprehensive on the day of my appointment, but I couldn’t have been more impressed by the experience. The hospital was calm, spotless and well organised, while every member of staff I met was professional, reassuring and genuinely kind.
As I checked in, I mentioned in my best intermediate Spanish that we lived near Tinajo. The receptionist smiled and replied that she was from Mancha Blanca. Before long, we were chatting about how September always brings extra life to the area during the Fiesta de Los Dolores.
It reminded me why learning even a little Spanish is so worthwhile. You certainly don’t need to speak it fluently. Every new word opens another opportunity for conversation, and every conversation helps you feel a little more at home. Thankfully, my early lessons with Spanish Tutor Luis Hernández certainly helped my grammar.
A few days beforehand, my lovely beautician Wanda had given me a quick spray tan. I joked that otherwise I’d have turned up looking like every hardworking chef after a busy summer – tanned from elbows to wrists and knees to ankles, while the rest of me hadn’t seen the sun for months. Sometimes it’s the smallest touches that help you feel a little more confident.
Meanwhile, my husband Matt was juggling his electrical work before collecting me (and afterwards!) Unsure exactly where to go, help arrived almost immediately when Sarah, our neighbour’s daughter, calmly guided him over the phone to exactly the right place.
It struck me afterwards that what makes Lanzarote special isn’t only the volcanic scenery or the year-round sunshine. It’s the people. The receptionist who takes time for a conversation, the local business owner who quietly lends a hand, the neighbour who helps when you’re feeling overwhelmed. Those are the moments that stay with us.
Thankfully, I’m now recovering well and, perhaps unsurprisingly, my thoughts have already turned back to food and my clients.
This summer has been filled with relaxed Mediterranean BBQs, generous tapas boards, milestone birthdays and family celebrations. There’s been a noticeable move towards informal dining, where everyone gathers around the table, shares platters and simply enjoys spending time together.
One question I’m regularly asked is which desserts have been most popular this season. My baked Canarian cheesecake continues to top the list, followed closely by profiteroles and, proving some classics never lose their appeal, a proper homemade trifle.
I’m also often asked when people should book their catering. My advice is simple: once your villa or venue is confirmed, it’s worth securing your date. Unfortunately, I’ve had to disappoint several families hoping for last-minute summer bookings because there was no availability left.
The diary for the remainder of this year is now around 90% full, with only a small number of dates still available towards the end of October and the beginning of November. Enquiries are also continuing to arrive well ahead for 2027 and beyond.
As always, thank you for pulling up a chair with me for a few minutes. Whether you’re sharing a family supper, hosting friends around the BBQ or celebrating a special occasion, I hope your table is filled with good food, laughter and the people who matter most.
From my kitchen notebook…
“The most treasured ingredient in any meal often isn’t found in the kitchen… it’s the people gathered around your table.”
Until next month,
Nerina
