Lanzarote’s continuing reliance on the car has been confirmed by recent figures from the Cabildo’s Statistics Centre, which reveal that there are 5,000 more vehicles registered  than a year ago. There is currently 1.1 vehicle for every adult resident on the island.

The total of 138.687 vehicles is also 7,000 higher than at any time before the pandemic, during which many hire cars were withdrawn from circulation.

The figures mean that there are 888 vehicles for every 1,000 people on the island, a figure higher than the Canarian average of 821 and way above the Spanish average of 512.

It is also higher than the average of any major European country and the USA.
