While Storm Therese brought heavy rainfall and localised flooding to Lanzarote, the island has escaped lightly compared to the Canary Islands to the west.

Therese has been described as the worst storm to hit the islands for 15 years, and has caused widespread flooding, landslides, road closures and power cuts in Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

A red alert for heavy rain was issued in Tenerife and an ES-smartphone alert was issued in the resort of Valle de Gran Rey in La Gomera due to heavy rains yesterday.

Areas of Gran Canaria received more than 100 mms (100 litres per square metre) of rain on Tuesday, and the director of the island’s emergency services has said that parts of the island had more than 700 mms of rain over the last six days.

While rain is still falling in the western islands, Lanzarote currently has a clear forecast, with cloudy weather, sunny spells and fairly stiff north breezes. The weather is predicted to be much sunnier over the weekend.
