The Canaries were one of the few Spanish regions where the Socialist party won in this weekend’s EU parliament elections, but it did so with a greatly reduced majority, and suffered defeat at national level.
The PSOE gained 30.46% of the Canarian vote, with the conservative PP close behind on 29. 27%. Meanwhile, the PP were the overall winners at the national level, placing more pressure on Pedro Sánchez’s fragile governing coalition.
As a result, Spain’s 61 MEPS will be composed of 22 from the PP, 20 from the Socialists, 6 from Vox and 13 from assorted smaller parties.
As a result of yesterday’s vote, the two Canarian MEPs representing the islands in Brussels will remain unchanged: the Socialist Juan Fernando López Aguilar and the PP’s Gabriel Mato.
