Arrecife Ayuntamiento has cancelled all events and declared three days of official mourning following the earthquake in Venezuela that has taken the lives of almost 600 people so far and is likely to result in a much higher death toll.

Cancelled events include the “Que Bien Me Sabe Arrecife!” folk performance that was scheduled to take place in the marketplace at the Plaza de las Palmas from 11 am.

A gathering will be held outside the Ayuntamiento building on Monday at 11 am in solidarity with the victims of the earthquake and their families. Over 740 Venezuelans live in Arrecife, and many more have adopted Spanish nationality.

Today it was confirmed that among the victims was Isabel Jara, the official Delegate of the Canarian Government in Venezuela, who was living in a building that was “reduced to rubble” by the earthquake.
