Ian Lane rounds up the season at UD Lanzarote and offers a few tips for the ever-growing army of football supporters who head to the Ciudad Deportiva in Arrecife for one of Lanzarote’s best days out.

Unión Deportiva Lanzarote finished the season in second position in the Tercera Division (Fifth Tier), but sadly missed out on promotion in the play-offs. However, their runners-up place means they’ll be in the draw for next season’s Copa Del Rey (Spain’s FA Cup equivalent.)

The club has been delighted with the amount of tourist and resident fans coming to the matches, making the Rojillos (The Reds) by far the most-supported club in the league both home and away. Everyone at the club is hoping this trend continues.

I receive so many phone calls and emails asking about tickets, but the reality is that anyone can just turn up and pay on the gate at any match. There is an average gate of around 1,000 supporters at every match and the stadium can hold 6,000, so you’re not going to be turned away. Nevertheless, there is only one ticket kiosk, so it’s a good idea to arrive 30 minutes before kick-off.

Match tickets only cost 10 Euros for adults and 8 Euros for pensioners with all children under 16 years of age admitted free of charge (discounts for residents). There is a huge, shaded grandstand but if you fancy sitting in the sun then there is plenty of room for that, too.

Refreshments and merchandise are also available. As countless visitors have discovered, it’s a cracking non-expensive day out and a real taste of Canarian football.

The season usually begins early September with pre-season tournaments in August. All details including season tickets and membership will be published closer to the time (details below).

During the summer the shop in Costa Teguise at CC Nautical, Local 25 (Up from Decades Bar and behind Café Oppa) will remain open with its usual hours of Monday to Friday 10am to 1pm and also every Wednesday 5-7pm. Merchandise will also be available at the stall (near the public toilets) at Teguise market every Sunday from 9.30am to 2pm.

From everyone at UD Lanzarote – have a great summer!
