Spain’s general elections on Sunday 29th November will appoint new representatives to Spain’s Congress, as well as its upper house, the Senate.

Only Spanish citizens over the age of 18 who are living in the country or overseas have the right to vote. This will include naturalised immigrants, including several British nationals who took Spanish nationality after Brexit.  Voters living permanently or temporarily overseas need to register on relevant censuses and request the right to vote If voting postally, they need to make their request by the 19th November and submit their vote by the 25th.

Campaigning will begin on the 13th November, and Lanzarote will be filled with political posters, flags, and hoardings for two weeks. The campaign will end on Friday 27th November, leaving Saturday as a “day of reflection” for voters.

Voting will take place at established voting stations throughout Sunday 29th November. This is not a public holiday, and most of the island will carry on as usual.

However, the postponement of the Saborea Lanzarote Food Fair, which was originally scheduled for that weekend, has come as a big disappointment, especially to many visitors who had deliberately booked holidays to enjoy the event. The fair will now take place on the weekend of the 19th – 21st March, just before Easter week.
