Spain’s two largest trade unions, the CCOO and the UGT, have announced a general strike, which will take place later this autumn.

The strike is a response to the defeat of the Spanish government’s two housing bills last Friday, which has caused widespread protests in Spain and prompted the government to call a general election on November 29th.

The decision to strike will require ratification by governing bodies, and the date has not yet been decided.

It will be the first general strike since 2012, when unions took action in protest at government cuts and labour reforms during the financial crisis.

“We will continue with mobilization and collective bargaining until housing ceases to be a privilege, and wages allow people to live with dignity,” the unions announced.
