Yaiza Mayor calls for action on social housing projects

Yaiza Mayor Óscar Noda has called on the Cabildo, the Canarian Government and the Canarian Housing Institute to tackle the delays that are stalling two important housing projects in Playa Blanca.

The first project relates to the construction of 136 homes in the Montaña Roja area, which has not started yet. Noda claims that plans are complete, the investment is around €34 million, and there are already 400 people in the municipality registered as applicants for subsidized rental housing: “What’s missing is for the Canary Islands Government to put the project out to tender and carry it out. We can’t continue turning a social emergency into a permanent promise,” Noda said.

The second project is the allocation of 42 homes which have already been completed in the Los Ajaches complex. These were transferred to the Canarian Housing institute earlier this year on the understanding that keys would be delivered before summer. However, this has not yet occurred.

Noda commented “It is unacceptable that there are finished, empty public housing units while hundreds of people wait. Bureaucracy cannot continue to keep the doors closed to 42 families.”
