Yoné Caraballo of the New Canaries /Canarian Block party has called for a change of direction in policy to prevent the current tourism model from leading to an island of 200,000 residents.
Caraballo, who will stand for Cabildo President next year, said “We cannot accept as normal that thousands of people join a territorially limited island every year while we continue to expand tourism and lack the most basic thing, housing security.”
Calling for a moratorium that would halt the creation of new tourist accommodation, Caraballo said “Lanzarote is reaching limits that are no longer theoretical, but visible in housing, water supply, roads, waste, energy, territory, and the capacity of natural spaces.”
“If every year we need more beds, more workers, more housing, more cars, more roads, more water, and more energy to sustain tourism, we have to ask ourselves where that model ends. And the answer is evident: in ecological, territorial, and social disaster,” he concluded.
The New Canaries /Canarian Block party is the second-largest regionalist formation on the islands, generally supporting more left-wing and environmentalist policies than the Coalición Canaria. Although historically more influential on the western islands, the party is hoping to perform well on Lanzarote next year.
