Ecologists In Action have requested access to the files for the project for a wind turbine and irrigation project at La Santa. The works in question are already at an advanced stage.

The €24 million project, promoted by the Lanzarote Water Council and the public company SEIASA, involves the construction of a 70-metre wind turbine which will provide power for a desalination plant and pump water from a reservoir to provide irrigation water for farmers in the north of the island.

The project has already been criticised by Socialist members of Tinajo council, who claim that solar panels could have been a less visually damaging option, while ecological groups have expressed concerns about the impact of the work on local wildlife. The construction has been taking place during the nesting season of endangered local birdlife.

However, the project is fully supported by Tinajo’s Mayor and local agricultural collectives.
