There are some evenings as a private chef that stay with you long after the last plates have been cleared away.
Nerina from Event and Catering Solutions Lanzarote recently returned to one of her favourite villas on the island. A beautiful, peaceful place with an outdoor kitchen and dining area. A space that always seems to encourage people to slow down, pour another glass of wine and simply enjoy being together.
The booking had been arranged by Chris as a surprise celebration for two ladies in the group who were both turning 60. The brief was relaxed and sociable. Spanish tapas, good wine, laughter and a warm Lanzarote evening under the fairy lights.
Where the evening leads
The funny thing about this job is that you never quite know where the evening will lead.
One minute Nerina was serving tortilla Española and sizzling garlic prawns, topping up glasses of Rioja and checking the padrón peppers on the grill. The next, they were deep in conversation about a small old market town back in the UK.
Not just the same county. Not even the same nearby area. The very same town.
Within minutes they were talking about old pubs that no longer exist, familiar roads, teachers from school days, places they all remembered from years ago. Little details that instantly transport you back in time. Funny how someone can simply mention a street name or a pub sign and suddenly you are nineteen again for a brief moment.
Halfway between Nerina’s past life and the one she’s created in Lanzarote, sat under the warm sky surrounded by Mediterranean food, somehow they had all ended up back in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire for half an hour through memories alone.
More than just the menu
That is one of the things Nerina loves most about food and hospitality.
People often think hiring a private chef is purely about the menu. But honestly, the food is only part of it. The real magic is usually what happens around the table itself.
Stories get told. Families reconnect. Old memories resurface. Strangers become friends. And sometimes, completely unexpectedly, you discover you all once walked the same streets many years before.
As a chef, Nerina is invited into some very special moments in people’s lives. Birthdays, anniversaries, proposals, family holidays and long overdue reunions. It is never really just about cooking dinner. It is about creating an atmosphere where people relax enough to talk, laugh, reminisce and make new memories together.
