Two movies that filmed in the Canary Islands will compete for the prestigious Palme d’Or at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, highlighting the growing international presence of the archipelago’s film industry.

Among the contenders is “Amarga Navidad” by acclaimed Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, which was partially filmed in several locations across Lanzarote. Also competing is “El ser querido” by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, a mainly Spanish co-production with France that was produced by a Canarian company and filmed partly in Fuerteventura.

The Cannes Film Festival runs from May 12 to 17, and the Canary Islands will also be represented in the Cannes Premiere section by “The End of It”, directed by María Martínez Bayona and shot in Tenerife. The film is a co-production involving Cobalt Films and Mediapro Canarias alongside partners from Norway and the United Kingdom. Its cast includes Rebecca Hall, Noomi Rapace, Gael García Bernal, Beanie Feldstein, and David Verdaguer.

Beyond the films themselves, the Canary Islands’ audiovisual industry will have a significant presence at the Marché du Film, the market held alongside the festival. Canary Islands Film will host its own stand, bringing together around twenty professionals from across the islands’ film sector for meetings, presentations, and networking events aimed at attracting further international productions to the region.

The Canarian delegation includes Canary Islands Film director Natacha Mora, as well as representatives from the Gran Canaria Film Commission and the Zona Especial Canaria. Their base within the Cinema from Spain pavilion will host more than thirty scheduled meetings with industry professionals from around the world.
