A major crackdown on illegal fishing within the protected waters of the La Graciosa has resulted in the seizure of 230 kilograms of fish.

During the intervention, officers intercepted a vessel that was not listed in the registry of boats authorised to fish in the reserve. The boat was found to be transporting fish caught illegally using a method that is strictly prohibited.

The origin of the fish breaches several provisions of that legislation. Firstly, express authorisation is required for any fishing activity in the La Graciosa Marine Reserve.

Secondly, the use of traps within the reserve is forbidden. Fishing activity in this area is strictly limited to certain methods. For commercial fishing, only very specific traditional gear is permitted. Recreational fishing, meanwhile, is restricted to rods, lines or trolling.

The commercial fisherman involved has been charged with several administrative violations. It was confirmed that he was setting traps in areas such as Playa Lambra and Punta La Sonsa, both located within the reserve. According to the investigation, the individual left the traps anchored for several days before returning later to collect his catch. Furthermore, this activity took place at night, with navigation lights turned off to avoid detection.

Under the Canary Islands Fisheries Law 17/2003, fines can range from 301 euros to more than 300,000 euros. Offenders may also face revocation of their fishing licence.
