The Marea Viva party has called for the re-establishment of Puerto del Carmen’s market, as well as other markets in the towns of Tías.
Puerto del Carmen’s market, located in the old town harbour, opened in 2014 and operated for six years. Tías Ayuntamiento claimed that a debt of €450,000 owed by the company which managed the market was the reason for its closure.
Marea Viva, a party composed of former members of the San Borondón party which initially proposed the market, claim that the closure left dozens of stall holders “completely unprotected against a decision that they had nothing to do with.” They are calling for a “clear answer” from Tías as to whether the market will ever re-open. Tías is the only municipality on Lanzarote without any kind of regular market.
