40% of tourists who visited the Canary Islands in the first quarter of 2024 had visited the islands in the past, according to a survey from the Canary Islands Statistics Institute.

According to ISTAC’s Tourist Expenditure Survey they have found that 40% of tourists visiting the Canary Islands are regular visitors, while 24% of tourists arrived for the first time in the first quarter of 2024.

The highest percentage of repeat visitors were tourists from Nordic countries with 52% having been to the Canary Islands at least six times previously, followed by British (50%), Irish (45%), German (38%), Spanish (37%), Belgian (33%), Swiss (31%), Italian (28%) and Dutch (25%).

French tourists were found to be the least frequent repeat visitors with just 14% having visited the islands previously.

The same survey found that for 1,053,597 people over the age of 16 who travelled to the Canary Islands in the first quarter of 2024 it was their first time. The highest percentage of this goes to French tourists (50%), followed by Belgian (40%), Other Countries* (39%), Dutch (30%), Swiss (30%), Spanish (26%), German (25%), tourists from Nordic countries (16%), Irish (15%) and British (14%).

* Tourism figures cover a number of countries, however, those that fall outside of this are listed as otros países (other countries).
