TNEcom Canarias, a cybersecurity firm, has warned motorists to be cautious about fake SMS messages requesting payment of traffic fines.

The “smishing” campaign comes after a recent leak at the Traffic Department’s database, which released information about 34 million drivers in Spain.

The public are advised not to click on any link in an SMS relating to a traffic fine, and to contact the Traffic Department to verify the fine. If it is discovered to be a scam, users should report it as spam and notify the authorities.
