The Arrecife local police were called to the sewage treatment facility last week, after a report that a 29-year-old man had fallen into one of the tanks and was unable to get out.
Last Wednesday, while making his rounds, a security guard at the sports centre in Argana Alta heard the cries of a man near the sewage treatment facility.
He quickly dialled the emergency services and reported it to the police who arrived shortly after.
Once inside the facility, the local police spotted the 29-year-old man who had fallen 2 metres into water that is 2-3 metres deep in itself. The young man was clinging onto a plastic tube to stay afloat but was showing signs of fatigue after holding on for some time.
After several minutes of trying to pull the 29-year-old man out of the tank, they finally managed to pull him high enough that he was able to grab onto the edge and pull himself over.
According to the report, the 29-year-old had been holding onto the plastic tube to stay afloat for approximately five hours after falling into the tank. He was immediately taken to the hospital in Arrecife where he received further treatment.
The 29-year-old had fallen into the tank while trying to capture images of local birds that were nearby.
