37,000 Canarian children could be affected after the Canarian Federation of Transport Businesses (FET) announced a suspension of all school transport on the islands for tomorrow, January 9th.
The Education Council of the Canarian Government has responded that “despite accepting all the demands of the FET, the Federation has decided to maintain its decision not to offer services on the first day of return to class after the Christmas holidays.” Nevertheless, schools will open as usual and school meals will be provided.
As this is not a strike, there is no requirement to provide minimum services. The dispute arises from historical debts owed to the transport sector, which the federation complains have gone unpaid.
Around 3,000 children on Lanzarote use school transport, which is mainly provided by the Amanda Bus and Lanzarote Bus companies, both of whom belong to the FET.
