The first endoscopic ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgical operation took place at the Dr José Molina Orosa Hospital earlier this week.
Endoscopic surgery is minimally-invasive technique that involves the insertion of a scope – a flexible tube fitted with a camera, a light and a cutting tool in the case that excision is required.
The operation at Arrecife Hospital involved a patient with tumours in the nasal passages. The patient recovered well and was discharged with in 48 hours of the procedure.
The surgeons were Juan Ramón Gras, a specialist ENT surgeon from the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau in Barcelona, and Dr. María Martel, from the Hospital Del Mar, also in Barcelona. The operation was observed by professionals from Lanzarote for training purposes.
