Following the intense, short burst of rainfall that hit parts of Playa Blanca earlier this week, Yaiza Ayuntamiento has moved swiftly to assess the damage and coordinate a response.

The heaviest downpour, which saw 105 litres of rain per square metre fall in a short period on the evening of Monday, March 23th, caused damage in the Montaña Roja area, with Faro Park bearing the brunt of the weather.

Mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, called for a detailed report on the impact to both public infrastructure and private property. Building on that initial work, the Mayor convened a site visit this Thursday alongside the Councillor for Public Works, Ángel Lago; the Councillor for Public Safety and the Montaña Roja District, Beatriz Vázquez; and a municipal technician. Together they met with the owners of Club Lanzarote and their technical-legal team to review the initial findings and map out the next steps.

According to the mayor, the meeting addressed “constructive solutions, which we have conveyed to the developer of the partial plan, aimed at resolving the issue with the goal of preventing or greatly minimising the impact of weather phenomena similar to Storm Therese.”

Clean-up operations are already under way, with municipal staff and Club Lanzarote continuing their work, supported by a crew from one of the Cabildo’s employment programmes. Meanwhile, the Montaña Roja developer has commenced repairs to pavements on the most affected streets and is set to move forward immediately with reinforcing the barranco (concrete storm channel) near Calle Bélgica. The proximity of this street to the hillside, combined with a lack of vegetation on the mountain, caused the infrastructure to overflow, sending torrents of water and sediment rushing downhill.

The flooding has also taken a toll on local homes, with nearly one hundred properties in Montaña Roja affected. Yaiza Ayuntamiento has confirmed that experts from the Insurance Compensation Consortium will be visiting the area this Friday to begin assessing the varying degrees of damage to private property.
