Work has commenced this week on reinforcing the barrancos in the Montaña Roja area, following the flash flood that struck Playa Blanca last Monday.
The initial phase of work is focused on the drains located between the Playa Burgado and Playa Vista residential developments.
The Mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, praised the collaborative effort behind the swift response. He highlighted “the coordination between the Ayuntamiento and Club Lanzarote and the swift action taken by this developer of the partial plan.”
The Mayor visited the site of the first intervention alongside the Councillor for Public Safety and the Montaña Roja District, Beatriz Vázquez, and the head of Club Lanzarote, Joaquín Cañada. The visit followed a coordination meeting held the day before, which was attended by Yaiza’s Councillor for Public Works, Ángel Lago, and technical staff from both entities.
Outlining the immediate objectives, Mayor Noda explained: “The goal is to complete the cleanup and reinforcement of this first drain, as well as the repair of Avenida Faro Pechiguera, and then continue with the section of the drain located closer to the mountain.”
In addition to the storm drain work, the Mayor also reported that cleanup operations on roads, sidewalks, and medians are being carried out by staff from a Lanzarote Island Council employment programme.
“We will provide timely updates on the progress of the proceedings, and we are also closely monitoring the insurance claims filed by affected residents with the Compensation Consortium,” the Mayor added.
