The yellow wind alert issued by Spain’s weather agency AEMET has been extended until midday on Tuesday. The warning now runs from 3 am, Monday 29th June until midday on 30th June.
Strong northeastern winds are forecast, with gusts of up to 70 kph. They are most likely to affect the southern half of the island during the evening and night.
In addition, the Canarian Government has issued a pre-alert for temperatures that could reach 32 degrees Celsius in inland and southern areas of the island. While still not comparable to the heatwave that has roasted most of Europe in recent days, the authorities recommend that people take caution, especially during the hottest hours of the day from 11 am until 4pm.
High seas are also forecast, although no warnings have been issued in this respect. Red flags were already hoisted on several of the island’s beaches on Sunday as sea conditions worsened, and it is advised to stay away from risky areas on the northern and eastern coasts.
