Cooler months offer an opportunity to make more of a Lanzarote garden, whether that means growing fresh herbs beside the kitchen door, planting winter vegetables or establishing fruit trees that can thrive in the island’s distinctive climate.

November marks a useful change of season for gardeners in Lanzarote. While much of northern Europe is preparing to put gardens to bed for winter, the island’s relatively mild conditions mean there are still plenty of opportunities to plant, grow and harvest.

For anyone with an outdoor space, autumn and winter can be a productive time to think beyond ornamental plants and consider what the garden could provide for the kitchen.

Vegetable growing is one possibility. Leafy crops such as lettuce, rocket and spinach are worth considering during the cooler months, while radishes can provide a relatively quick harvest. Peas, broad beans and other seasonal vegetables may also be suitable, depending on local conditions and the available growing space.

The key is to work with Lanzarote’s climate rather than against it. Sun exposure, wind, soil quality and access to water can all influence which crops perform well. A sheltered plot with suitable soil may offer different opportunities from an exposed garden on the coast.

Winter is also an particularly useful time to establish fruit trees. The cooler temperatures and increased seasonal moisture can help newly planted trees develop their root systems before the hotter, drier summer months arrive.

There is also a much wider choice of fruit trees suitable for Lanzarote than many residents might realise. Alongside familiar options such as citrus, figs and pomegranates, there are varieties originating from South America and Asia that can adapt particularly well to the island’s conditions. Some are notably hardy and require relatively little watering once established, making them worth considering for gardens where water conservation is important.

There is no need to have a large plot to get started. A sunny terrace or patio can accommodate pots of herbs such as rosemary, thyme, oregano and mint, giving cooks easy access to fresh ingredients. Containers can also be used for salad leaves and some compact vegetable varieties, provided they are large enough and have adequate drainage.

Even a windowsill can become a small growing space. Pots of herbs offer a practical starting point for people who want to experiment with growing their own food without committing to a full vegetable garden.

Water management remains important throughout the year. Although cooler weather can reduce evaporation, newly planted crops and container-grown plants still need appropriate watering. Mulching and suitable soil preparation can also help retain moisture, while the use of picón can contribute to the appearance and practical design of outdoor planting areas.

At Flower Power Garden Centre, the emphasis is on selecting plants suited to Lanzarote’s demanding conditions. The centre offers herbs, flowers, adult plants, cacti, succulents, pottery, soil, picón and other gardening supplies. Its English-speaking team can advise residents on suitable choices, while its display garden provides ideas for different planting combinations.

For those considering a more substantial vegetable plot or a garden that combines edible and ornamental planting, Flower Power also offers landscaping consultation, planning and design.

With the right plants and a little forward planning, November can be the beginning of a growing season rather than a quiet period in the garden.
