Oswaldo Betancort has called for a discussion about graffiti on abandoned buildings in Lanzarote, questioning where street art ends and damage to the island’s heritage begins.

Lanzarote Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort has called for a debate on graffiti and its impact on the island’s historic buildings and cultural identity.

In a video showing examples of graffiti on various abandoned buildings across Lanzarote, Betancort questions whether more needs to be done to protect the island’s heritage while providing spaces for street art.

“Street art has its place and it value as a form of expression, but where do we set a limit when we talk about our old houses, our heritage and the places that form our identity?

“Should we put aside more places for street art and protect our heritage more strongly?”

The comments raise questions about how Lanzarote can accommodate street art while preserving historic buildings and places that form part of the island’s identity.

Betancort’s call invites discussion about whether designated areas for graffiti could help balance artistic expression with the protection of Lanzarote’s architectural and cultural heritage.
