Spain has been shocked by the death of Jesús de Miguel, the CD Tenerife footballer who died of a heart attack after an on-pitch collision.
The incident occurred in the final moments of Tenerife’s match against Andorra, when De Miguel and Andorra’s goalkeeper Jesús Owono clashed. Owono was sent off for his reckless challenge, but it soon became clear that De Miguel was seriously hurt.
The 30-year-old was rushed to hospital but later died without regaining consciousness. National Police have opened an investigation, which is standard procedure after a death not resulting from natural causes. although it is considered unlikely that criminal charges will result.
CD Tenerife said, “We are broken with pain, with a lump in our throat, unable to believe this is true.” De Miguel’s body will be returned to Toledo in Spain for burial.
