Lanzarote remains on red alert for hot weather today.
The AEMET weather agency has issued a red alert for the island from 9am to 8pm, with maximum temperatures of 40 degrees forecast and a minimum of 26 degrees. The interior and south of the island will be worst affected.
Currently, an orange alert has been issued for tomorrow (Sunday) and a yellow alert for Monday. All outdoor daytime activities have been suspended by the authorities over the weekend.
The Canarian Health Council, which has also issued a red alert on health grounds, advises islanders to stay cool, not travel outside unnecessarily, stay hydrated and take care of vulnerable people.
