Playa Chica in Puerto del Carmen was under a red warning flag yesterday after high E. coli levels were detected in its waters.
E. coli bacteria generally indicate the presence of human sewage, and exposure can cause stomach cramps and diarrhoea, although no cases have been reported on the beach.
Incidents such as this are rare on the beach, which is open to the sea.
