Music schools on Lanzarote have already started to receive copies of a new book, “The Traditional Musical Repertoire of Lanzarote and La Graciosa”, which attempts to preserve the folk music traditions of the island.
The book, written by Lanzarote’s timple virtuoso Benito Cabrera and flautist Pablo Diaz, contains sheet music and lyrics for several of the folk styles of the island, from the isas, folias and malaguenas that are well known at folk gatherings, to sailor’s songs and the festive music of the Ranchos de Pascua.
The book was edited by the folk group Los Campesinos and has been published as part of their 60th anniversary. Copies have been presented to the conservatory in Arrecife and music schools in Tías and Tinajo, with others to be distributed.
Ascensión Toledo, of the Publications Department of the Cabildo, said “We believe the best destiny of this book is to arrive in the hands of boys and girls all over the island, so that they can learn about our folklore.”
December will be an important month for folk music on Lanzarote, as the Navidad Isleña festival will take place all over the island. We’ll bring you more details when the schedule is announced.
