A 49-year-old man has been arrested in Gran Canaria after allegedly shooting two dogs and leaving their bodies outside their owner’s home, in what investigators believe was linked to an ongoing family dispute.
SEPRONA launched an investigation after a resident in Valsequillo reported finding a cardboard box outside his property containing the bodies of two small dogs belonging to him.
According to investigators, the incident was allegedly motivated by previous family disagreements. After leaving the box at the victim’s home, the suspect is also accused of sending threatening messages via social media, prompting the victim to file a formal complaint.
SEPRONA officers recovered the animals and arranged for post-mortem examinations at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The necropsies concluded that both dogs had died from multiple gunshot wounds to the head.
The investigation included forensic examinations, inspections and evidence gathering, which led officers to identify a suspect. Investigators believe the dogs were killed on a family-owned property shared by those involved before their bodies were transported to the victim’s address.
A judge subsequently authorised a search of the suspect’s property. The operation was carried out with support from the Civil Guard’s Public Security Unit (USECIC), where officers seized evidence considered relevant to the investigation and confirmed the suspect was in possession of firearms.
The man has been arrested on suspicion of offences relating to animal protection and making threats. The case has now been passed to the competent judicial authorities for further proceedings.
The investigation remains ongoing.
