Lanzarote vineyards produce more than 3 million kilos of grapes in bumper harvest

More than 3 million kilos of grapes have been harvested in Lanzarote’s unique vineyards this year, an almost four times as much as last year’s poor crop.

The rains of last winter may have spoilt a few holidays, but they were good news for Lanzarote’s vineyards, which have produced a bumper crop of fruit described as “excellent” by the island’s Wine Council.

Malvasia, listán blanca and listán negro have already been harvested, and this week is likely to see the gathering of the remainder of the muscatel and diego grapes, which are left on the vine longer to produce sweeter dessert wines.

Local farmers have received good prices of up to €4 per kilo for the grapes. The first of this year’s wines should be available by the end of October or early November.
