Buggy tours will be prohibited from protected zones and rural areas by August, according to Jesús Machín, the Cabildo’s Councillor for territorial property.

Speaking on Radio Lanzarote, Machín said he expected to have a precautionary ban in place by next month, which would prevent buggies from operating away from tarmacked roads and in rustic areas

The announcement follows several complaints that buggies are causing noise pollution and dust clouds, damaging dirt tracks used by rural residents and possibly disturbing wildlife.

Lanzarote still does not have an official map of routes that can be used by buggies and other vehicles, although Canarian law has required this since 2019. Nevertheless, Machín claims he has the necessary reports to justify the temporary ban.
