The Canarian Government is confident that the UK will accept new control measures on potato exports, once they are approved by the Spanish Agriculture Minister.

Narvay Quintero, Canarian Agriculture Councillor, said that the measures had already been agreed with Canarian farmers and the government delegation on the islands, and would include “washing potatoes, bagging them in agricultural co-operatives rather than the fields, and introducing strict information about origin.”

Quintero also pointed out that the UK itself had certified the absence of pests from its crops last week, following the discovery of Colorado Beetle in two home counties farms in July.
