Lanzarote population tops 170,000

Lanzarote’s population has passed 170,000, according to Spain’s National Institute of Statistics.

Population figures of 170,155 in July 2026 show an increase of 2,786 on last year’s total. The increase on Lanzarote accounts for 22% of the population increase on the Canary Islands. However, the Canaries are one of the regions with the lowest population growth in Spain.

Population increase in Spain is currently driven by the arrival of residents born overseas, as the birth rate within the country continues to fall. Currently, the three nationalities that showing the greatest increases are Colombians, Venezuelans and Moroccans. 

281,584 residents in Spain were born in the United Kingdom, of whom 266,462 continue to hold British nationality. Irish-born residents number just under 21,000.
