Yesterday was a glorious June day on Lanzarote, with sunshine, cloudless skies, temperatures in the mid-to-high 20s, a light breeze and calm seas. The beaches were full of people, including many locals following the midsummer tradition of taking a dip on St John’s Day.

Yet Lanzarote was also cooler than almost anywhere in western Europe on June 24th, 2026 as the continent experienced an immense heatwave. France registered its hottest day since records began; the UK recorded the highest June temperature ever when thermometers in Hampshire registered 36.1 degrees Celsius, and several red heat alerts were issued all over mainland Spain.

Galway, Leeds and Warsaw were among the few places that were unable to say their weather was “hotter than Lanzarote”, as their temperatures could only equal those of the Canary Islands.

Lanzarote has remained relatively cool as the “heat dome” that has brought intense heat to Europe is concentrated over large land masses. The island is also combed by constant northern breezes.

The heatwave in Europe is forecast to continue for the next few days. On Lanzarote, the wind will pick up a little, and Friday may see some cloud cover, but temperatures are likely to remain relatively unchanged.
